What is Abilify Maintena (injection) used to treat?
The injection is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia1 and bipolar disorder type 1 also called manic depression in adults.
Warning
If the person is allergic to this medication then administration of this drug should be avoided. This drug should only be taken by the prescription of a doctor.
Note: If the person is suffering from conditions such as heart disease, heart attack, abnormal blood pressure levels, abnormal blood sugar levels, and low WBC count then administration of this drug should be avoided.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding warning for Abilify Maintena injection
Abilify Maintena should be avoided during the last 3 months of pregnancy otherwise it may cause breathing issues. If you are pregnant please let your doctor know before discontinuing the medication otherwise females may face withdrawal symptoms.
Also, the medication is not safe to be taken during breastfeeding.
Route of administration
The injection is given intramuscular once every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on your condition. However, the dose may change according to the patient’s symptoms.
Generally, the doctor suggests the patient take the medication orally for 4 to 5 weeks before starting the patient on IM injections. The patient must follow up with the doctor for dosing instructions very carefully.
It is advisable to not change your dosage without the doctor’s advice.
It is advised to stay hydrated as the IM injection of Abilify Maintena can cause dehydration.

It required emergency medical help. Overdose of this medication can cause drowsiness, vomiting, aggression, confusion, tremors, fast or slow heart rate, seizure, weakness, difficulty breathing, and unconsciousness.
Precautions
The patient should avoid getting up too fast after getting the IM injection as it may cause dizziness.
It is advisable to avoid driving or any physical activity after the injection. The patient should notice their symptoms and discuss them with their primary care physician.
If a person is on Abilify Maintena injection then he or she should avoid alcohol.
Also, the injection may cause dehydration. So, it is generally advised to drink plenty of water and avoid sodas and carbonated drinks.
Side Effects
If the personal experience the following side effects after the injection then they should contact emergency;
1. Uncontrolled muscle movement in your lips, tongue, eye movements, etc.
2. Hot flashes and feeling uncomfortable.
3. Dysphagia (Difficulty swallowing)
4. Fever, sweating, mental confusions, arrhythmia, or unconsciousness.
