What is Abilify used to treat?

Symptoms

Abilify or aripiprazole is an antipsychotic medication. It is used to treat mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Tourette’s syndrome, and irritability. Sometimes it is used in combination with other medications to treat depression.

Abilify is available in tablet and IM injections.

It is believed that mental-related problem arises due to the disbalance of certain chemicals in the brain, hence Abilify is used to restore the balance of chemicals in the brain (neurotransmitters). Also, this medication can help to improve concentration. Aripiprazole was approved by regulatory agencies for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder type I. This drug is used by the doctor to reduce hallucinations and improve concentration. It also gives clarity of thoughts. Abilify is also very beneficial for the person suffering from nervousness, and lack of self-confidence.

Side effects

Some people might be allergic to this medication.

Some people with certain medical problems and depression might experience increased suicidal thoughts. If you experience such symptoms, report to your doctor immediately.

Generally, it is suggested to stop using Abilify if someone experiences fever, muscle stiffness, increase heartbeat, severe headache, abnormal muscle contraction, or speech difficulty.

If you are taking this medicine for a long time, do not stop it immediately. Always consult your doctor.

When you visit your doctor and he starts you on Abilify, please let them know if you are suffering from any of the following health conditions;
1. Heart problem or stroke
2. High blood pressure.
3. Diabetes
4. Seizures
5. Low WBC counts.

Because the oral solution of this medication contains sugar, before starting taking this medication please let your doctor if you have diabetes.

Also, Abilify can cause raise in blood sugar levels. It is always advisable to keep checking your blood sugar levels when taking this medication.

The orally disintegrating tablet form of this medication may contain over 3 milligrams of phenylalanine per tablet. Before taking Abilify Discmelt, tell your doctor if you have phenylketonuria (PKU).

If a female is planning for a pregnancy, please let tell your doctor. Antipsychotic medications should be stopped in the last 3 months of pregnancy otherwise they may cause serious problems in the newborn. It is advisable to do not to stop taking medications without a doctor’s advice.

Warning

Always take the medication as prescribed by the physician.

Do not stop the medication suddenly, it is advisable to always consult your doctor before stopping taking it.

The medication should be stored at room temperature and should be kept away from heat and moisture. Abilify should be used up to 6 months after opening but not after the expiration date.

  • What will happen if you miss the dose?

Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.

  • What will happen if I overdose on it?

Overdose symptoms may include drowsiness, vomiting, aggression, confusion, tremors, fast or slow heart rate, seizure (convulsions), weak or shallow breathing, fainting, or coma.
